We are seeing much discussion surrounding the topic of excessive cash premiums for HDB flats, with buyers desperate to get into public housing market. The cash premiums, equivalent to Cash-over-Valuation (COV), has hit as high as the median at $24,000 in the fourth quarter of last year, based on the Housing Board (HDB) data. In a way of saying, if the valuation of the HDB unit is $400,000, the buyer may have to fork out around $24,000 more on top to purchase it.

Every Mahjong player knows that before they play with someone new, everyone needs to acquaint themselves with the rules. Now that the Singapore government has sanctioned Mahjong and PA is even holding tournaments, I thought it would be good to get an idea of what exactly is Singapore Mahjong. I come from Malaysia and learned Mahjong in UK from my mother. She in turn learned it from her father who was a scholar from China, emigrating just before The Cultural Revolution. My uncles played the "classical" game which I naturally came to learn but it has few adherents nowadays.

Having moved to Singapore, married and bought a property, it seems the time has come to look at financial planning. Ideally, everyone needs it but many of us never get down to it. And if we do, it seems to get so complicated that we either run away or we just close our eyes buy the first thing that comes along. It seems more advisable that such a thing deserves more consideration. Here's what I found out and my attempt to unravel the tangle of jargon and marketing that surrounds it.
