Is LV Sands headed for bankruptcy?
Started by Atltrainman on Sunday, 12th October 2008 12:12 am
Is the LV Sands company headed for bankruptcy? Let's look at the recent developments:

On Oct 1st, Sheldon Adelson loaned the company $475 million dollars to help meet liquidity requirements of a $5 Billion dollar loan.

In May LV Sands lost a judgement for $58.6 million to Richard Suen over his assistance in 2002 with LV Sands getting a Macau gaming license. When LV Sands filed an SEC report and said it didn't set money aside to pay the judgement. Suen recently filed for a court order to have LV Sands post a bond on the award, while the case is in appeal, because the current economic meltdown has affected the company's fiscal stability. (http://www.lvrj.com/business/30835674.html)

LV Sands stock has gone from a high of $148.76 per share last October to a close last Friday of $14.05 per share. (http://tools.morningstar.com/charts/Mcharts.aspx?Country=USA&Security=LVS&ExchangeId=NYSE&sLevel=A) And Return on Equity has gone from a high of 67% in 2004 to only 5.38% in 2007 and the TTM for 2008 is showing a -1.27%.

The Venetian, LV Sand's flagship hotel, is having to resort to a promotion offering their suites for $119/night with a $50 gaming credit (http://capps.zt03.net/custapps/vene1/aoofh/web.php?md=3200474&ed=141402471&ord=141402471&em=friesster@aol.com&b=237)

So what does the future hold for LV Sands? Can bankruptcy be far off? Will LV Sands have to look for a merger partner with deep pockets in order to weather the current economic storm?

Delay for Marina IR opening?
By Lim Wei Chean
THE integrated resort at Marina Bay is unlikely to be fully open for business at the end of next year, sources have said.

An old British-built sea wall on its site, which stands on reclaimed land, is among its problems. It delayed foundation works by three to four months, and then a shortage of labour and the rising cost of building materials also created setbacks.

I read too... wonder what would be the fate of this IR at Marina Bay? It's official that they are unable to open in 2009Q4. Hopefully, they don't go bust. I was shocked to read that the parent company's share plunged from US$180+ to US$8 only! Gosh... Also, 10,000 vacancies that they promised a few days ago... what would be the fate of those people???

30 Oct 2008

1. Marina IR not likely to open fully in end-‘09 – ST, pA1
2. Shows, wedding dinners rejected – ST, pA4
3. ‘Work on Marina Bay IR held up by old sea wall’ – TNP, p8
4. STB currently in talks with Las Vegas Sand on recent bad news – ZB, Frontpage

Reports noted that the Marina Bay IR was unlikely to be full open for business at the end of next year, as it was “several months” behind schedule due to an old British-built sea wall on its site that delayed foundation works by three to four months. Other reasons included the shortage of labour and the rising cost of building materials.

seems like not only LV Sands... the casinos in Las Vegas itself also not doing well.

if they go bust... wonder if the government will take over it? will be interesting if we have a nationalized casino. or perhaps Singapore Pools will take over and hire some consultants from casinos to run it? hehe

I took this on 3 Oct 2008. Hopefully, IR @ Marina Bay is like the weather then. Beautiful rainbow over it after a heavy downpour.

Don't think Singapore Pools can manage this project. More likely for Capitaland. :)

1. UAE interiors contractor bags Marina Bay Sands job – BT, p7
Depa Ltd, the United Arab Emirates-based interiors contractor fitting out the world’s tallest tower in Dubai, has won a S$21 million contract to refurbish parts of the Marina Bay Sands resort. Depa would be working with its partner, DDS Contracts & Interior Solutions Pte Ltd. DDS is a joint venture between Depa and Singapore Exchange listed-Design Studio.

2. Going concern doubts removed: Sands – BT, p2
Las Vegas Sands Corp said “doubts about its ability to continue as a going concern have been removed after the completion of an offering of common stock, preferred stock and warrants provided about US$2.1 billion of additional capital”. The company said it was likely to use the capital resources to fund construction and development projects.

It is simply magnificent and breathtaking that will definitely beautify the skyline of Singapore! Its main intentions are to boost Singapore's annual Gross domestic product and generate more jobs, but I m just wondering..., with current economic turmoil worldwide, how is it going to affect the rate of visitors to the casino anyway? Sands and Sensibility...

Wonder how would this affect our Integrated Resorts?

1. STB fails to meet 2008 targets – TODAY, pB2
2. Singapore collects record S$14.8b in tourism receipts last year - CNA (3 Feb 2009) - taken from 938Live
3. $14.8b in tourism receipts last year, a record: STB - 938Live (3 Feb 2009)

Tourism arrivals in December last year fell to 888,000, down by about 7 percent from the same month a year earlier. For the full year, visitor arrivals fell 1.6 percent to about 10.1 million, and “as widely expected”, this falls short of an official target of 10.8 million. While tourism receipts last year hit a record $14.8 million – up 4.8 percent over the previous year – the figure failed to meet the Government’s goal of $15.5 billion. TODAY reported that hotel room rates were also slipping back to levels of two years ago – the average rate in December was $217, the lowest in 2008 and not far from the $211 seen in Dec 2007. However, according to CNA, the hotel sector remained robust, achieving an all-time record of S$2.1 billion in room revenue in 2008. Average occupancy rate was estimated at 81 percent, and a hotel room cost an average S$246 a night, an increase of 22 percent.

We would be most surprised if tourism is not affected. It is afterall the recession and people cut back on travels.
