We have a sparkling new hotel on Sentosa!

Capella Singapore opens amidst dwindling tourist numbers

SINGAPORE: An ultra-luxurious hotel has opened its doors in Singapore amidst dwindling tourist numbers here and in the region. Capella Singapore, located on Sentosa island, welcomed its first guests on Monday.

The S$400-million hotel is set within more than 12 hectares of sprawling land and lush greenery. It boasts 111 rooms, including 32 private villas – the first of its kind on Sentosa which come with their own pools.

But a night's stay at the hotel can set you back by at least S$750. Villa stays cost at least S$1,800 a night.

Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security S Jayakumar was the guest of honour at the hotel's official opening.

As the flagship property of Capella Hotels and Resorts in Asia, Capella Singapore is set to be the jewel in Sentosa's crown, with its edge in offering personalised service to its guests.

The hotel said despite the economic downturn and a dip in tourist numbers here, it is optimistic about occupancy rates. In fact, within the first week of opening, 65 per cent of its rooms have been booked.

Michael Luible, general manager, Capella Singapore, said: "We do not have check-in time or check-out times. If the guest would like to check-in in the morning, we'll have the room ready. If they want to check-out later, they can stay later in their rooms.

"Guests have different needs – some guests come to relax and unwind in the spa, other guests want to have activities, they want excursions, watch the opera, so we can tailor-make (programmes) during the guest's stay."

They claimed to be flexible with check-in and check-out time. Hmmm... does it mean the room still costs the same regardless if I check in earlier and check out much later?
