Hihi very interested in the vinyl flooring that you mentioned. Can you let me know what is the price range? Can it be overlayed on tiles, or preferably to hack all the old tilings? |

Hi, Enjoyed reading your blog . I have a lot of books as well and rather worried about the standard plywood bookshelving that most contractors propose. Would appreciate if you could share your carpenter/contractor info & rough estimate for your six metre bookshelf. Thanks |

Hi Wordsworth
Congrats on your beautiful home...I am definitely impressed and I just spent over an hour reading every page of your blog!! I am a big fan of your uncluttered, simple, woody concept for your home :) I never thought as well to use Vinyl for my flooring.
As i myself am starting to scout around for an ID for my new home renovation, I would be grateful if you could PM me your contractor/ID/kitchen cabinets contact :) BTW what is the name of the vinyl flooring you used?
Thanks a lot and enjoy your new home!!! |

Here's a snapshot of the long white shelves. All manner of books, CDs, DVDs (no bluray discs yet at the moment) and other ornaments can be found. We only managed to slot in a 40 inch TV and a rather petit bluray player to the left of it, but I think that's OK - not a big fan of large screens.
Perhaps in the future I'd like to find some space to a place an AV receiver and two bookshelf speakers.
Loads more photos coming your way, soon.
In case you're wondering, Wordsworth's my wife.

At the window-end of the shelves, lies my/our favourite corner. I like the breeze, natural sunlight and a green view. What's not to like? It is most unfortunate that I couldn't fit an AV receiver so I had to settle for a micro hifi, which you can see in the second cubby hole from the bottom. Music fills the living room a lot and rotation the tracks on the iPod with Miles, Acoustic Alchemy, Pelican and Isis.
And yes, that Caulfield poster's a little crooked. I have to sort that out later. |

Dear Wordsworth's & Audiojane, i enjoyed reading your reno journey. And i brought a resale flat floorplan exactly like yours. i like the way you did your aircon piping and conceal them. I'm renovating my house now and I try going to the big brands but was told that if i were to did it your way. They could not promise on the workmanship like water leaking, aircon not cold etc... So i would like to ask you for the aircon contractor you did from to consult their expertise. As it really giving us a headache if the pipings were to run all over. Thanks Wordsworth's & Audiojane |

Sorry for the late reply! This is what happens when I busy on a six-month-long work contract. Urgh!
Anyway, I've been here about 9 months now and my floor is still in great condition! We've celebrated birthdays, a housewarming, and many get-togethers and dinner parties and my floor is still absolutely fine. And, no, we don't wear shoes in the house, the floor does not feel sticky and it does not feel 'fake' at all (in fact, first-time guests keep asking me if it's engineered wood!).
And, right now, there's a Christmas tree sitting on my vinyl floor (yes, it's a real fir tree!) and no, my floor does not seem any worse for wear because of it.
And I have two really active 4-year-olds and they drag their toys and kiddy furniture all over the place and the floor is still just fine.
And, no, it doesn't need any special care. Good 'ol generic floor cleaner is more than sufficient!
And, yes, my contractor was a little fussed when I specifically asked for vinyl flooring (I think it was because of the extra hassle involved - he had to set up a whole new account with Formica because of it!) but I just gave him a long, steady look (the one I give my children when they are being naughty and disobedient) and he eventually gave in.

I spoke to several ID and contractors and seem that they do not recommend the use of vinyl flooring for home...most gave a big disbelief expression and comments like,
1) it's so thin, only less than 5mm, try laminate as it is at least 8mm
2) it's not suitable for home and only for commercial place
3) this particular ID highlighted that it has the sticky feel over time (becos of the plastic material?) and it's popular in western countries as they wear their shoes at home.
I'm not sure if they r adverse to vinyl floor due to their lack of expertise on this particular flooring or simply becos they do not know how to install them?? sigh... cos my main aim is to cut cost of renovation since vinyl floor can be overlayed.
So i called up formica, one of the supplier of vinyl flooring. Cost is $4.85 psf (includ material and installation) .I raised my concern to him and he assured that so far there are no formal complaints on their vinyl floor used in residential area. Things I wish to highlight in the conversation is:
1) He estimates the lifespan of the vinyl floor is 5yrs in a retail shop due to the high traffic. This is jus nice for commercial use as they usu. update and renovate the store every 5 years or so. For home, it will definitely be much longer since less traffic volume and home owners usu take good care of it.
2) NOT suitable for constant dragging of heavy furniture (like a warehouse) as it will wear off the vinyl.
3) Formica use waterbased adhesive to adhere to the flooring, unlike the ones used for cupboard laminate. Guess less fumes and smell.
4) For house renov, he recommends to lay the vinyl floor last as I highlighted what is the solution if wall paint splatter onto the vinyl floor. So I'm not sure if there is any remedy if marker ink accidentally stain onto the floor. But since it comes in pieces, he suggests to just change the affected pieces, but that will depends on the availability of stock...so good to buy more for such future change (homogenous tile owners also keep extra tiles for the same purpose)
I have not seen it in the home until I come across WW's thread and her beautiful home. I went to Comfort furniture and they installed in their 2nd level showroom...it's really beautiful...
Now my main concern if it feels sticky over time...decision decision....sigh...

Thanks liebling! This is truly beautiful!
I don't feel that any home is really complete untill there's a bookshelf full of books somewhere!

Hihi
very interested in the vinyl flooring that you mentioned.
Can you let me know what is the price range? Can it be overlayed on tiles, or preferably to hack all the old tilings?
Hi SSS!
Many apologies, can't remember how much it cost per sq ft now. But I do remember that it cost about $5K to refloor the entire flat (except the bathrooms and service yard) in vinyl.
And, yes, you can overlay it (my friend who stays in a condo did it - she hated the tiles that the condo originally came with and overlaid everything in vinyl).
But the previous owner of my flat had terribly uneven floor tiles in the living areas (dunno why...), so we had to hack away the old flooring entirely, level everything correctly and lay down the vinyl. If we had laid down the vinyl over a lumpy, uneven floor, we would have simply ended up with a lumpy, uneven vinyl-covered floor (since the vinyl would follow the contours of the old floor!).
So, whether you choose to overlay or hack depends on the current condition of your floor.
Best,
WW. |

I used Formica for my floors. It isn't the ... ahem... cheapest on the market, but I feel that it looks the most natural and they have good after-sales service.
Will PM you the name of my contractor and carpenter.
