Hi Wonderland,

Thanks for sharing and congrats on your dream home. I'm a quite a newbie at posting but have been a long time silent reader. I like to find out more about your 2 must have ie Blum and Dishwasher.

I am currently remodellling my house and have included Blum system in all my cabinetry works but opted the dishwasher out. Can you pls elaborate more on the dishwasher? I am concerned about the cleanliness and maintenance of a dishwasher or perhaps it might become a "white elephant".

HI ixlang,
the dishwasher is a common household item in Europe. It cleans very well and better than if you wash yourselves as it uses hot water (45-70deg). It is said that it also save more water, but I can't verify that.

You need specific detergent for dishwasher and they are expensive. But you don't need much, just 1 tablet per wash. You can check out the price at Cold Storage or NTUC. I also put special salt for dishwasher, but this is a habit from Europe where there is a lot of chalk in the water. You probably dun need that for Singapore. You can also buy the salt from supermkt.

As you know I bot the smaller machine 45cm vs 60cm as I want to wash often instead of keeping dirty dishes too long inorder to fill it up. If we cook we wash abt once every 2 days. I used it on a regular basis except for my cast iron pans and knives that i use regularly. I even put my plastic chopping boards inside!

If you have a large family or kids, I will recommend 60cm. Life will be different with the DW - less washing and squeaky clean plates!

Thanks Wonderland on your reply. Sorry, I have further Qs.

I guess I will definitely need to wash at least a load a day. I cook twice a day, 5 times a week. I do a fair bit of chinese cooking with soups, so there will be big pots. Does the plates comes out dry too? Can the dishwasher wash Bread pans, grilling/roasting trays?
I love to do chawan mushi (steam eggs). I understand they can't clean dishes with steam eggs.

The living room area

Shoe build-in

Note- you need to tell the contractor the height between each shelf. I thought this should be standard but they turned out to be too low for my high heels! So i have to remove some shelves to make space for them. grrr

The open shelf should also be bigger. My contractor intitally designed 40cm height but I reduced to 20cm which I regret now as its looks dark and the veneer (same as the bomb shelter) couldn't stand out.

This look like a good design :) does they do country style kitchen cabinets??

@ ixlang:  Wonderland and Liebling are right.  I join them wholeheartedly in recommending that you get a dishwasher.  It will wash AND dry your dishes.  Sorry, but I don't know about the steamed egg bit and therefore must remain silent on how it would do with steamed egg dishes.  But on the whole your modern dishwasher will wash your stuff, be it plates & bowls, silverware or glasses, as well as pots and pans.  Nowadays dishwashers have plenty of space for large items, you just need to load it properly to accommodate them.  Trust me, you do just one load in the dishwasher and you're sold for life!  Nothing else will ever take its place (unless of course you're employing kitchen staff).

Dishwashers get things a whole lot cleaner than anything you might take on by hand.  Once you have one maintenance shouldn't be a problem.  They are at least as endurable as cars!  In my over 40 years of marriage I'm now on my third dishwasher while sticking to my original husband.

cindy 44 - the shoe cabinet is made by my contractor based on my design. Since they are custom made you can practically decide what design you want.

cutiepie - yes they are from Picket & Rail. i bought them at a Deepavali sale i think it cost around $250-300each for the white ones and more for the yellow one. They are more expensive becos i chose fibreglass material over the cheaper plastic for stablility sake (plastic is lighter and easily tip over if they are small kids in the house)

Sorry I just checked my bill - the white ones are $399 and yellow ones are $449. The $150 ones that you saw are the plastic chairs which are much cheaper than fibreglass that I have.

i like the idea of using kitchen tiles in toilet wall. It looks like a brick wall!  I was looking for them in Soon Bee Huat but couldn't find any. What is the price psf? Where did you get them from? I also like your floor tiles at the washing machine area.

My contractor source the tiles for me. I just show him the pictures. They were more expensive than the cheap big china tiles but cheaper than mosaic - i can't remember but should not be too pricey. maybe $2-3psf.

hi ntforum - sorry for late reply i don't come here very often now. Yes my contractor did everything. my 50k includes rewiring and flooring. i only change the water pipes from kitchen to toilet but not the toilet pipes as my place was only 5yrs old.
