Whampoa Food Street (Keng) Fish Head Steamboat Eating House

Do you like fish head steamboat? just tried one at Balestier. Lots of pictures :)

My brother read from other forums that this is one of the better fish head steamboat places in Singapore.

So, we went to try today.

There were no customers except us when we were there at about 12.20pm. I've passed by this place a few times in the evening. The shop looked busy. Probably, they cater to dinner crowd.

The wall of its interior is filled with pictures of TCS stars patronising the shop. I guess one of the reasons is Caldecott Hill is just nearby.

Wet Tissue with their shop name and address on it.

We had Goby. They said no MSG added to the soup when asked. I believe them cos I don't feel thirsty after the meal and its taste is blander than the ones I have tried before.

Toufu - I find it okay. Sister-in-law doesn't like it.

Fried Prawn Roll - Though above average, this is not the best I've eaten so far.

The style is also not my favourite too. Something about the filling that I can't tell what is wrong.

Foo Yong Egg - Good

Spareribs - we find this too hard. Don't order this if you have elderly with you.

The damage we had. See below.

Where is this place?

Address:

Whampoa Food Street (Keng) Fish Head Steamboat Eating House
556 Balestier Rd S(329872)

If you have tried, did you like it?

I will try this one soon....

Have you tried the one @ the Whampoa Market (Blk 91 i think)? There are many stores within the area (e.g. Blk 92) but according to most people, the one at Blk 91 is the best! :)

Tried before, the food is slightly above average but they actually charge for plain water. This is ridiculous especially when patrons are already being charged GST. When questioned, they explained that they charge for plain water as conventional coffee shops do that. When questioned about GST, they retorted that conventional restaurants do that. So I came to the conclusion that they want to have the cake and eat it too. Best of both worlds kind of charging method. Updated on my condemn list liaoz.

hi hi..
i have lots of comment abit this stupid ‘restaurant’.
i have also experience the same thing as calvin, they charged us 20cents for a cup of plain water, which i find it ridiculous. I feel that you should at least inform us that the plain water is chargeable, rather than keeping quiet and happily charged us at the end of the day. I can only conclude that the boss is money face.

My sis recommended me to this so call 'restaurant'. Which i view it as coffeeshop. It doesn’t look like a restaurant anyway, with a few old aunties, dressed so unprofessional serving us. Maybe bcoz they feel that they have air-conditioned the place, so they are fit to call themselves restaurant, and is eligible to charge ppl 7% gst (to be the same as those real professional restaurant), and charge 20cents to be the same as those coffeeshop. So, what actually are they? Rest or coffeeshop?.
Frankly speaking, the food is ok, not very very fantasist. But to me, customer service is very important loh. i will never spend a single cent in this so call restaurant again with such a service standard. Is not the money, is just not worth paying.

I've been supporting them for many years and watched them improved over the years. From a small store in a market, but business was too good that they invested on their current outlet (balestier). They used to charge for water but they don't anymore for quite sometime already. The boss and lady boss themselves were kind and well mannered towards the customers. The food standard has improved alot during this period of time, they also renovated their place and now they are working on the 2nd level also. I don't think the TCS artists went there to eat because the Caldecott Hill was nearby. I think the food standard was good and the steamboat was really tasty and good so many people went. You should go and see the place again. I really loved it and i am sure i will continue to support them! It's worth it.
